Japan’s SEGA Akihabara arcade is closing its doors in August

After 17 years of being a notable landmark of one of Tokyo’s most iconic districts, the Sega Akihabara Building 2 will close its doors at the end of August.

Per GameRant, fans discovered a sign outside of the world-famous arcade center on August 1, which bears a message of thanks for the love and support it has received since it opened in 2003.

‘Notice of closure. Thank you for your continued patronage. We are sorry to announce that this branch, Sega Akihabara Building 2, will be closing.

Our last day of operations will be Sunday, August 30. The entire staff wishes to express, from the bottom of our hearts, our sincere gratitude at the loving support you have given our establishment for so many years.’

No reason for the closure was provided, but the ongoing pandemic is most likely the cause. The SEGA Arcade apparently first closed in mid-April and reopened in mid-June, but with Japan tourism at its record low, not much business was to be had.

But as SoraNews24 notes, it’s survived by other SEGA arcades in the area, so Akihabara’s spirit of gaming and Japanese pop culture is far from over.
