Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ remake just lost the show’s OG creators
This could be bad
Hopes for a respectable live-action take of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ took a hit when the show’s original creators announced their departure from the Netflix project.
Michael Dante DiMartino posted an open letter to fans revealing the difficult decision, in what could be chalked up to creative differences.
‘When Bryan [Konietzko] and I signed on to the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners’, reads an excerpt.
In a joint announcement for the series, Netflix said that it was committed to honoring our vision for this retelling and to supporting us on creating the series. And we expressed how excited we were for the opportunity to be at the helm’.
‘Unfortunately, things did not go as we had hoped’.

Following a horrendous take by M. Night Shyamalan, it could be recalled that Netflix banked heavily on the OG creators to assure fans that the beloved series would finally get the adaptation it deserves.
Bryan Konietzko made a separate statement on Instagram, reiterating Netflix’s failure to follow through with their vision, citing a ‘negative and unsupportive environment’.
But even if the falling out is a huge blow, DiMartino and Konietzko are still optimistic that the project will still turn out decent.
‘Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying’, wrote DiMartino.
But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make’.
‘Perhaps the team that remains might still be able to make something fans of the original and an entirely new audience can enjoy’, added Konietzko.
Per IGN, Netflix has since responded, saying that they have complete faith in the remake’s success despite the departures.
‘We have complete respect and admiration for Michael and Bryan and the story that they created in the Avatar animated series. Although they have chosen to depart the live-action project, we are confident in the creative team and their adaptation’.
Here’s hoping for the best
