UST cancels USTET, will judge applications based on grades

Admissions just got trickier

If you’re looking to take up your college studies at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) for the next school year, you might want to take note of a major change.

Instead of the usual UST Entrance Exams (USTET), the institution will now judge admissions based on the ‘academic performance and records of the applicant’. The new parameters, called the UST Admission Rating or USTAR for short, was adopted due to the ongoing quarantine restrictions in the metro.

A brief look at the university’s official admissions page reveals that the now-viral announcement has been replaced with a simple hashtag #USTAR2021.

The decision didn’t exactly sit well with many aspiring Thomasians. Some see USTET as a second chance to make up for their academic deficits, while others point out that not all grading systems are created equal. Plus, as of writing, there isn’t a clear breakdown of the USTAR parameters that was referred to.

UST’s decision might only be the first in what could become a new normal for other universities. And while there’s always the possibility that the move could be reversed given the strong reactions, here’s hoping a fair consideration will be given to all, regardless of their academic background.
