After 5 years, CNN’s ‘Great Big Story’ comes to an end

After 5 years and 2,600 stories in over 100 countries, the ‘Great Big Story’ comes to a close. The CNN initiative made its mark for its cinematic docus and short films about various interests and figures across the globe.

The Philippines has been featured seven times during GBS’ run, with stories featuring boodle fights, Banaue’s wood scooters, Batangas’ bird nest soup, and the legendary Apo Whang-od.

According to their farewell video, the studio had over 12 million followers and 180,000 minutes viewed per month by its end.

According to a September 23 report by Variety, CNN’s decision was a result of ‘economic conditions spurred by the spread of the coronavirus pandemic’.

‘As executives considered the future of the business, they felt they had to give more priority to other parts of CNN’, reads an excerpt, with Variety noting that public momentum surrounding the series has waned in recent months.

Great Big Story hoped to be CNN’s answer to similar youth-centric publications such as Vice and Buzzfeed. But even with its demise, we would argue that it made its mark.

‘More than anything, we hope that we sparked your inner storyteller and made you feel a bit closer to your neighbors all around the world’, read an official statement.

‘We all have a Great Big Story, now go tell yours’.

Thank you for the last five years. We will miss you. 🚀
