Haruki Murakami’s short stories will be adapted into an animated film

Per animation site Coffee Brew, one of Japanese author Haruki Murakami’s iconic books is finally getting a full-length animated feature.

The upcoming film takes inspo from the 2006 collection ‘Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman’, which features 24 short stories written from 1980 to 2005.

‘A lost cat, a voluble giant toad, and a tsunami help an unambitious and schizophrenic accountant and his frustrated wife to save Tokyo from an earthquake and find meaning in their lives,’ reads the film’s official synopsis.

Meanwhile, the trailer is as Murakami as it gets. We first find a man complaining about his wife’s absentmindedness – as it then turns into a series of familiar occurrences from the author’s works, from ghost cats, talking (subconscious) toads, to good ‘ol childhood trauma.

 

 

 

 

The film’s French director, Pierre Földes, explained that he first approached Murakami to adapt one of his longer novels, but the author offered his short stories instead.

Földes then planned an anthology film comprised of sequels, but he decided to produce it into the conjoined Murakami mess we know and love.

‘It was only later, while I was reworking my script, that I began to interpret characters from different short stories as multiple facets of the same characters, at different points in their lives. I like to think of my life so far as a series of short stories.’

‘And thus, little by little, the idea came to me to merge the stories and characters, and combine them in a shared chronology.’

‘Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman’ is set to be completed in early 2022.
