‘The Lion King’ (the ‘meh’ version) is getting a sequel

Here we go again

IMO, the animated/live-action hybrid remake of The Lion King is the definition of the phrases ‘there was an attempt’ or ‘it exists’. It’s not as bad as people say it is, given that it’s a faithful adaptation coupled with jaw-dropping, photorealistic visuals.

However, it wasn’t that good either, as its realism also took the souls of its characters. ‘Hakuna Matata’ just isn’t the same without the playful, animated expressions of the OGs.

But given that it made over $1.6 billion at the box office, Hollywood law dictates that all gripes must be screwed, and a sequel has to happen. And happened it has, as per Deadline, The Lion King 2 has just been greenlit.

The follow-up will reportedly be part sequel, part prequel, as it ‘will further explore the mythology of the characters, including Mufasa’s origin story’. Barry Jenkins, who helmed Best Picture Winner ‘Moonlight’, is set to direct.

There’s no word yet on a release date or the cast, but here’s hoping Beyonce, Donald Glover, Billy Eichner, and Seth Rogen return. At least we’ll have some decent tunes in case it gives us the ‘meh’s.
