Wikipedia, everyone’s research partner, is getting a brand new look

After more than 10 years of donning its familiar simple layout, our favorite Free Encyclopedia is finally getting a 21st-century rebrand.

Wikimedia, Wikipedia’s organizing group, shared that they haven’t made any big changes in the past to avoid overwhelming users. With the Internet going crazy over layouts changes (ehem, iOS 14), we kind of get their point.

As the new year is slowly rolling by though, Wikipedia now wants to modernize its typically text-heavy interface to be ‘an experience that feels similar to our long-time users, yet straightforward and intuitive for new folks.’

The first few confirmed changes are a revised logo, easier search function, a collapsible sidebar to have more space for text, and a one-click button for language switching.

‘We have not created a complete, detailed product specification. Each feature will be built and implemented separately, over time.’ MediaWiki’s improvement site reads.

Features which have been created are still being adjusted and improved. Our decisions are based on community feedback, user testing, and extracted API data.’

The site redesign is set to be completed in 2021. Instead of a swift feature rollout, Wikipedia will drop the changes gradually so they receive user feedback and reinvent accordingly.
