‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’ is the ultimate ghost/love story this spooky season
Perfectly splendid
Netflix’s ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor‘ has officially dropped in time for the spooky season, and it’s more psychologically eerie than scary.
Starring ‘The Haunting of Hill House’s Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel, and Carla Gugino, ‘Bly‘ serves as the second but separate installment of director Mike Flanagan’s ‘Haunting‘ series – and it’s nothing like the first season.

The series takes place in London, where American nanny (or au pair, if you want to be fancy) Dani is hired to take care of two young kids, Flora and Miles, who are living by themselves in a sprawling mansion in the province of Bly.
As if children aren’t creepy enough, their parents died a few years back. To add even more trouble for everyone, their former nanny also drowned in the mansion’s nearby lake not so long ago.
Running away from her own demons, Dani accepts the full-time, live-in position and takes residence with the kids who seemingly know more about the house than they let on. Oh, and there are also a handful of ghosts hiding in every corner so that’s fun.
Without spoiling anything, ‘Bly Manor‘ undoubtedly takes the horror genre to more heart-tugging levels with its nuanced take on grief and guilt.
Whereas ‘Hill House‘ focused on family drama and childhood trauma, ‘Bly Manor‘ takes viewers on a gut-punching journey through the ghosts we create by ourselves, and how they continue to haunt well after our lives.
Regarding its scare levels, it’ll probably leave you with a lingering feeling of dread rather than outright terror. Similar to ‘Hill House‘, Flanagan’s works don’t rely on jump scares and cheap tactics, but actual world-building to keep viewers hooked.
Overall, it’s a binge-able watch that’ll likely leave you scouring the show’s Reddit or watching YouTube analysis videos to figure out how the hell it all tied together. Even the lesser horror fans can appreciate a good ghost/love story when they watch one.
Verdict: ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor‘ is bound to leave viewers more heartbroken than terrified – but that doesn’t make it any less dreadful.
