Those annoying phone game ads have been banned for being ‘misleading’

Welp

Per BBC.com, advertisements for the mobile games ‘Gardenscapes‘ and ‘Homescapes have officially been banned and tagged as ‘misleading‘ by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

You’ve prob seen them before: ads promising an escape-type game where players need to use strategy and problem-solving skills to make it to the next level. ASA found that when you play the game itself, its concept is just a matching puzzle game similar to Candy Crush. Shocker.

‘It would not be surprising for a publisher to target certain types of gamers with ads featuring the more competitive and problem-solving elements of their title, even if they don’t make up the bulk of gameplay,’ explained games analyst Matthew Bailey.

‘However, an increasing number of gamers are becoming annoyed with irrelevant, misleading, and badly implemented mobile game ads.’

The ‘GardenScapes‘ and ‘Homescapes‘ developer Playerix defended the ‘misleading‘ allegation, claiming that the visuals used in ads can actually found through mini-games scattered throughout the app. You just need to cross over 20 or more puzzle levels, that is.

ASA then rebutted that because those games were on ‘distant levels‘, the players expecting the initially promised concept would never see them anyway.

Let’s just call a spade a spade
