White sand lover wants you to come with him to Boracay

Following his fascination with Manila Bay, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque continues his white sand adventures to the good ‘ol beaches of Boracay. Roque made his location known on Facebook, where he shared a photo of him sitting on the shore.

‘Ang making masayang lugar mula noon, hanggang ngayon’ captioned Roque, who has also demonstrated his fondness for aquatic life in the past.

According to a government press release, Roque is in Boracay to encourage more tourists to visit the island, which opened its doors starting October 1. The move hopes to revive the country’s tourism industry, which has been badly hit by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

As a precaution, visitors aged 21 below, 60 and up, and those with underlying medical conditions are not allowed entry to Boracay. Travelers must also undergo reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests at least 48 hours before their trip.

But even with the safety precautions, only 25 out of 96 expected bookings arrived on the first day, a development which was nonetheless expected by local officials, per CNN Philippines. Aklan Governor Florencio Miraflores chalked the low turnout rate to the strict policies and the pvblic’s lingering fears.

CNN also notes that Boracay has had zero COVID-19 cases since it first opened to Western Visayas tourists last June 16.

As of writing, PH has 322k COVID-19 cases (of which 43,642 are active), with 273k recoveries and 5,776 deaths.
