Why aren’t we talking more about Alex Bruce?
When I first saw Filipina rapper Alex Bruce live at a music event last year, I was in awe. This girl had the swagger to command the stage, the dance moves to keep you hooked, and the flow to elicit a few ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’.
Sure, all of these are the requirements for what makes a good hip-hop artist, but when you consider the fact that Alex is only 13 years old, the word ‘incredible’ becomes a good term to sum up this Batangas-born prodigy. She also isn’t restricted to a single style, as her rap game effortlessly transitions between Tagalog and English as seen in hits ‘Mind As A Weapon‘ and ‘Pull it Off‘.
At such a young age, Alex Bruce is only destined for greatness. Earlier this year, she dropped ‘Go Crazy’ with producer August Rigo, whose songwriting work involves artists such as BTS and Justin Bieber.
Alex’s already-impressive discography will only continue to expand, with her latest single ‘Yakap‘ as the latest proof.
In contrast to her previous outings, which all scream ‘I’m a badass‘, Alex opts for a dreamy R&B/hip-hop blend to explore her first experiences with puppy love and infatuation. It’s a softer, more vulnerable version of the artist – a welcome change of pace from Alex’s intense image, and coincidentally, from a year that feels the same.
‘I’m 13 turning 14 this Christmas, and like a normal teenager, I started to experience weird things like puppy love. So for me to express my feelings, I wrote a song about this person’, shares Alex.
‘Yakap’ is an innocent, charismatic ode to simpler times, when simping after your crush was the biggest thing on your mind. And with everything that’s going on right now, something simple might just be what we need.
