Even Miss U Rabiya Mateo call resiliency is ‘overused’

The queen has spoken

Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo has just about enough of the ‘Filipinos are resilient’ narrative – and she’s making herself clear.

During an interview for GMA’s ‘Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho’, the beauty queen had sound advice for Filipinos currently struggling amidst the back-to-back Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses.

‘Yung resiliency, parang overused siya. To the point na sometimes we dont look at the problems to find the solution and we just tell other people “all we need to do is have a positive mindset. We’re gonna overcome this”,’ Rabiya shared during the virtual interview.

‘But where are the tangible programs to help the people to help the people being affected by [calamities]? So yes, iba pag may positive outlook, but kailangan natin magkaroon ng tangible and possible solutions.’

‘Hindi tayo magllearn, hindi natin mapapabuti ang community natin kung puro resiliency nalang.’

Rabiya herself is a supertyphoon survivor, as she and her family in Iloilo were one of the many affected Filipinos during Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

Nagsulat kami sa may kalsada na “We need help. We need food”. Kaya sabi ko ngayon na may bagyong Rolly t’saka Ulysses, ramdam na ramdam ko po talaga ‘yung paghihirap ng mga kababayan natin’, the queen furthered.

Rabiya’s words come at a time when many are calling to stop the normalization and exploitation of ‘Filipino resiliency, as government accountability and disaster preparedness ought to be the forefront of the country’s calamities.

Did she stutter?
