Russia’s ‘Sputnik V’ vaccine could be ready for PH by Jan 2021

Happy New Year?

Per CNN, PH Ambassador to Russia Carlos Sorreta has shared that Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine dubbed ‘Sputnik V’ could be available to PH as early as January 2021.

During a Malacañang press briefing, Sorreta explained that Russia is ready to produce the vaccine for Filipinos once our authorities have completed a thorough review.

‘Of course, it’s subject to doing our own due diligence on it but they can start producing for us because they have to produce it as if it’s (been) ordered. As early as January if we are ready to accept it.’

‘They know the demand is very high so it’s really a matter of how early we can do our own due diligence and then sign an agreement, do the procurement process.’

He furthered that PH ought to ‘be ready with some of the infrastructure para ho sa storage at the required temperatures’ since Russia’s vaccine needs to be stored at low temperatures.

Sputnik V apparently has a 92% effectivity rate since its interim trials just this week, beating US pharmaceutical Pfizer’s 90% COVID-19 efficacy. It had a rocky start back in August after it was announced to be effective even without formal clinical trials.

To afford these vaccines, President Duterte announced in October that PH could borrow as much as $300M (PHP ₱14B) from the World Bank.
