UP students are getting an automatic pass this sem

Amidst the calls to #PassAll and #EndTheSemNow, all University of the Philippines (UP)  campuses will now be implementing a ‘no-fail policy‘, where no student will get a grade of ‘4’ (conditional) and ‘5’ (fail).

‘This is an initial victory for the UP student body as we continuously fight for the most inclusive and compassionate solutions for our education! UP, pakinggan ang UP community!’ the University’s Office of the Student Regent (OSR) shared via Twitter.

UP made the decision after online classes were disrupted by the aftermath of the back-to-back Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses. Numerous petitions from student councils and alliances then cropped up to call for the end of the semester.

‘Due to the onslaught of consecutive typhoons, more members of the UP community suffer from further inaccessibility to resources such as internet connectivity and learning devices, with some students being gravely affected by the disaster,’ UP Diliman’s Rise for Education Alliance said in a statement.

‘Amidst all of these, students are still obligated to worry about their academic deadlines instead of focusing solely on recovering from the repercussions that the recent calamities have caused, which were amplified due to the government’s negligence.’

Per UP OSR yesterday evening, more than 15,000 people signed the 7 petitions encompassing all UP campuses.

This wouldn’t be the first time that colleges have given consideration for students, as De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, and Ateneo De Manila have all cancelled their 2021 entrance exams.

Though this serves as the first time that a ‘Big 4’ college has given its students an automatic passing grade.
