‘Ready Player One’ is getting a sequel

If you geeked out over those nostalgic pop culture references in ‘Ready Player One’, then you’ll just be as hyped over the news of its upcoming sequel.

In an interview with Inverse, author Ernest Cline, who released the sequel to the 2011 novel just last year, revealed that a film adaptation is already in the works.

‘It’s in the early stages right now, especially since Hollywood is in limbo right now. But I can tell from the experience of making the first movie that everybody had a lot of fun’.

According to Cline, Ready Player Two takes place nine days after Wade Watts inherits the digital realm of OASIS from its creator, James Halliday. The story will feature Wade’s struggles with running OASIS and the discovery of a mysterious upgrade that promises to make the game even more addictive than it already is.

There’s no word yet on the return of director Steven Spielberg or the cast, which included Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, and Lena Waithe. The book follow-up received mixed reviews, with critics noting its failure to expand the world in ‘new and exciting ways’.

Still, there have been instances where movies turned out better than their source material. Personally, I feel like I won’t care much about the plot if they bring back something as epic as that Gundam vs Godzilla throwdown.
