The irony: Anti-rallyists have rallied against UP rallyists

There’s this tongue twister

In light of the recent heated events surrounding the dismantled University of the Philippines – Department of National Defense (UP-DND) Accord, which previously forbid state forces from entering university grounds, a number of pro-government groups have now breached the University Avenue in UP Diliman.

I guess a rally to end rallies is a thing now.

Per @phkule, the League of Parents of the Philippines, Liga Independencia Pilipinas, and Duterte Youth partylist held a ‘De-radicalize UP Diliman‘ protest to support the termination of the UP-DND Accord.

ICYDK, the UP-DND Accord started in 1989 as a joint agreement to prevent state authorities from entering the universities without justification and consent from UP officials. The Accord began from the numerous years of persecution of youth activists, which escalated during the Martial Law era.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana made the termination official this week, citing alleged recruitment activities within the campus by the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).

Despite the vague accusations from the AFP, today’s activities signify support in terms of the Accord termination – though people can’t help but point out the irony of… sort of fighting fire with fire.

Meanwhile, other universities like De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, University of Santo Tomas, and Far Eastern University released a statement on January 25 shutting down the allegations that universities are so-called NPA ‘recruitment havens’.

‘This charge, though, is really getting old—a rehash of the public accusation the general made in 2018—irresponsibly since cast without proof,’ they shared in a joint statement.
