This week: Vico Sotto, ‘tagay advocate’, anticorruption champion

Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto is the toast of social again, even more so than usual. The 31-year-old has always been in the people’s good graces, thanks to his image as a model pvblic servant. But this week, the Internet’s boyfriend is in the spotlight for two reasons: for being a supposed tagay advocate and an international anti-corruption champion.

So first, how did Vico become the symbol for our penchant for liquid courage? Well, it’s not really him for starters, but a doppelganger by the name of Jhono Tayopon. Tayopon, who posted a viral selfie on Alak Pinas, apparently bears a slight resemblance to Vico, according to the pvblic.

When asked by Coconuts Manila about his newfound fame, Tayopon claims he’s never been compared to Vico before, and simply wanted to share his breakfast combo of beer and lugaw (porridge). Cheers, Bisyo Sotto!

In more serious news, the real Vico Sotto has been recently tagged by the US State Department as one of the world’s 12 Anti-Corruption Champions.

According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the nod recognizes ‘individuals who have demonstrated leadership, courage, and impact in preventing, exposing, and combating corruption.’

‘Under the Biden Administration, the State Department is committed to preventing and combating corruption globally. Corruption’s impact on the quality of governance, security, and economic stability is well understood. It erodes the trust and confidence of citizens in their public institutions and puts an anchor around the neck of developing economies’.

Vico’s bio highlights his defeat of the Eusebio’s 27-year dynasty in Pasig, his efforts to reduce bribery and kickback’s on government contracts, and his overall transparency on governance.

Joining Vico on the list are key figures from Ukraine, Sierra Leone, Iraq, India, Albania, Ecuador, Micronesia, Guatemala, Kyrgyz Republic, Libya, Micronesia, and Guinea.
