Microsoft looks for new default font, auto-disqualifies Comic Sans

ICYMI, Microsoft announced its plan to retire Calibri as its default font, and with it, introduced five candidates to serve as a replacement: Bierstadt, Grandview, Seaford, Skeena, and Tenorite.

In addition, users will actually have a say in the decision, which they can tweet to Microsoft’s official Twitter account. For those who prefer a test run first, the fonts are available across the Microsoft 365 apps. If you still can’t make up your mind, the tech giant provided a description of each font on its official blog.

Bierstadt is a ‘precise, contemporary sans serif typeface inspired by mid-20th-century Swiss typography’, while Skeena is ‘ideal for body text in long documents, as well as in shorter passages often found in presentations, brochures, tables, and reports’. Seaford is known for a form that creates more recognizable word shapes, Grandview for taking inspo from ‘classic German road and railway signage, which was designed to be legible at a distance and under poor conditions’, and Tenorite for being Times New Roman 2.0, albeit with a ‘warmer, more friendly style’.

The change comes 13 years after Calibri replaced Times New Roman as the de-facto option in 2007, but with time comes tiredness, and the company seems to be looking for a fresh look for its Office Suite programs.

Microsoft’s decision to go with the aforementioned five also effectively squashed the hopes of any wiseass looking to pitch Comic Sans and Papyrus – two universally hated fonts by designers.

Still, with the flustercluck that is 2021, we wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft risked it all and decided to screw with us for a day or two.
