The 2021 Academy Awards has given us red carpet highlights, milestones in diversity, and surprise – another Disney film to look forward to. The trailer for the 2021 adaption of West Side Story premiered during the ceremony.

West Side Story features a musical film debut for director Steven Spielberg, who is more well-known for his grand adventure, action, and sci-fi works.

West Side Story came from a 1957 Broadway show that narrates a classic love story about teenagers from New York City who fall in love with each other during the 1950s. However, the two lovers come from rival street gangs, namely the Jets and the Sharks.

Spielberg’s remake of the movie is closer to the original Broadway script than the 1961 film. The Broadway version had a good run of 732 performances, while the 1961 film won 10 Oscars during its time.

The star-studded cast includes Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, and many more.

The film was initially planned for a December 2020 release but was pushed back on December 10, 2021, due to COVID-19. While you’re waiting for it to hit the big screen, you can watch the trailer below.
