Billie Eilish takes back her power by owning her insecurities

Wearing an oversized shirt, brightly colored hair highlights, and baggy sweats – that’s probably how people viewed the way Billie Eilish presented herself before. When her British Vogue cover shoot dropped, we can see her wearing a form-fitting corset and her new blonde hair color that led to a world record of having a million likes on Instagram within six minutes.

ICYDK, corsets are one of the most controversial garments in fashion. However, Billie wore it to prove a point in rejecting patriarchal beauty standards. In the interview with British Vogue, she already answered a question that she assumed would draw criticism, ‘If you’re about body positivity, why would you wear a corset? Why wouldn’t you show your actual body?’ Her response was valid and straightforward: ‘My thing is that I can do whatever I want.’

She elaborates by adding, ‘It’s all about what makes you feel good. If you want to get surgery, go get surgery. If you want to wear a dress that somebody thinks that you look too big wearing, f**k it – if you feel like you look good, you look good.’

The interview revealed that Billie was also a victim of abuse when she was younger but kept it to a minimum by stating that “the details are hers.” The magazine also clarified that the perpetrator wasn’t from the music industry. She explained her side as they go about her latest single, Your Power, and a line from her 2019 single When I Was Older.

She says, ‘It’s about taking that power back, showing it off, and not taking advantage with it… I’m not letting myself be owned anymore.’

The singer again predicted that critics would comment on her decision to open up about a sensitive experience while continuing to show more of her body. ‘You’re going to complain about being taken advantage of as a minor, but then you’re going to show your boobs?,’ said Billie. ‘Yes I am, motherf**ker! I’m going to because there’s no excuse.’

The release of Billie’s cover story is in line with her recent announcement for her upcoming sophomore album, Happier Than Ever, on July 30. Her latest single, Your Power, is out now.
