Filipino artist Ronald Ventura sold his “Party Animal” painting for 120 million pesos

A Filipino artist named Ronald Ventura sold his Party Animal painting at Christie’s Live Auction on Monday. When someone hears the words “party animal,” it probably gives an impression of a person who often goes to social events and ends up having a wild night. The idea remains the same once you see the painting, but it literally depicts, well, animals.

The international art auction was called “20th and 21st Century Art Evening Sale”, where Ventura earned HKD 19,450,000 or approximately PHP 120 million. The price was set 16 times higher than its pre-sale amount, as per ABS-CBN News.

Christie’s explained that their recent auction offered ‘20th Century Art’ and ‘21st Century Art’, replacing past nomenclatures. The new format highlighted the “radical nature of the modern masters and their lasting impact on the art being created today.”

Party Animal was first displayed at Ventura’s “Wild State of Mind” solo exhibition at the Tyler Rollins Fine Art gallery back in 2017. According to Art Radar Journal, Party Animal was described as “a large painting depicting anthropomorphised animals at a birthday party.” The exhibition displayed his fascination with animals, blending cartoon characters and a mixture of media iconography.

‘I will paint and update a painting until I am satisfied. It’s like a film director who is shooting a scene—at certain points he will feel like he needs more extras or more light,’ Ventura said as he explained his working method to Artnet. ‘This is the closest analogy to my painting process that I can think of. It is like a process of addition and subtraction.’

Ventura took the art world by storm when he sold his first painting, “Grayground,” for $1.1 million at Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings Auction in 2011. He then became one of the highest-selling artists from Southeast Asia. The artist also sold “Wonderful Bait” for HKD 7.8 million during Christie’s Asian 20th-Century and Contemporary Sale in 2014, as per Manila Bulletin.
