Google’s flexible work sched will make us say “sana all”
People’s workspace has changed from being in their favorite spot in the office to a mere table inside their bedroom. With the pandemic changing how ordinary workdays used to be, Google has updated their flexible work schedule for their employees, and it’s something that similar companies could consider.
As per The Verge, a spokesperson of Google shared that CEO Sundar Pichai sent an email to their employees announcing his plan: ‘To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021 for roles that don’t need to be in the office.’
On May 5, Pichai announced on a blog post a more detailed outline about the company’s methods for their employee flexible workweeks. They give Googlers the option to spend two days “wherever they work best” and three days back in the office. Employees from specific teams will have the chance to apply for remote work arrangements, and others can opt to work at a different office location from across the globe for a certain amount of time.
With that, Google expects 60 percent of their employees to come to the office a few days a week for work, 20 percent will be working at new office locations, and another 20 percent will be in a work-from-home setup.
Pichai closed the announcement by saying, ‘I know this past year hasn’t been easy for anyone and many Googlers are still suffering as the pandemic wears on. We will get through it — together — as a Google community.’
‘The future of work is flexibility. The changes above are a starting point to help us do our very best work and have fun doing it. Look forward to continuing the conversation with all of you,’ he continued.
When Twitter announced that they were considering permanent work from home arrangements for their employees in 2020, other tech companies like Google, Apple, and Facebook quickly followed similar methods. Apple, in particular, has around 85 to 90 percent of its employees working from home as well.
