TIL: ‘Harana’ is not a Parokya Ni Edgar original

Yeah, yeah, I know.

Call me young blood, the clueless millennial, but I was genuinely unaware that Harana, the unofficial anthem of my lovestruck high school days, was not an original composition by Parokya Ni Edgar. I was always a fair-weathered PNE fan; Adored their songs, but not really that well-versed in their lore.

A post on Reddit confirmed as much, revealing the OG to be Tony Lambino, a former member of the 90’s band Smokey Mountain and now Managing Director at Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. OPM aficionados might scoff at this ‘revelation’, but personally, this is the equivalent of finding out Willie Revillame is a beast on the drums, or that ‘Tatsulok’ wasn’t originally from Bamboo Mañalac.

As for Lambino’s take, ngl, it has its charm. It’s just as earnest as PNE’s, but it’s more soothing and the vibe better captures how I pictured myself when I (pitifully) sang this to an SO all those years ago.

Apparently, the versions by Lambino and PNE debuted five years apart, the former in 1992 for his album First Note, and the latter in 1997 for their second album Buruguduystunstugudunstuy.

Seeing as Harana is practically a flagship song for Parokya Ni Edgar, revelations like these will always pop up from time to time. But hey, that’s the beauty of music. It’s so diverse, you never know what to expect.
