Meet the first Filipino who won the ‘Diana Award 2021’ for her pandemic food program

Bringing home another first for the country, Shawntel Nicole Martinez Nieto is the first Filipino among the 400 inspiring young victors worldwide to accept the Diana Award 2021, as per ANCX.

The Diana Award is a prestigious accolade for young leaders, between 9 and 25, who carry out activities such as social action and humanitarian work. The award is also established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Nieto won for her commitment to organizing One Cainta Food Program (OCFP) along with her family and for being the president of the Society of Sustainability Practitioners. OCFP distributed over 200,000 bags of food to families in need amid the pandemic. She was also featured in BBC World in July 2020 because of the initiative.

The 24-year-old awardee was nominated by Global Changemakers Association, the Dalai Lama Fellowship, and BMB Solutions. Nieto told ANCX of the win, ‘My heart is full.’

‘I’m filled with gratitude for the recognition I’ve received, pride for having finally seen the name of the Philippines included in the Diana Award’s Roll of Honor, and so, so much humility,’ she continued.

This year’s awards were considered special since Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, made a virtual appearance and delivered a message to the recipients. He said, ‘Our mum believed that young people have the power to change the world.’

‘She believed in your strength because she saw it day in and day out and in the faces of young people exactly like you, she witnessed a boundless enthusiasm and passion,’ he added.
