This 19-year-old is the first Filipino to win a golf major

Another Filipino has made history during the 76th U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship last Sunday. A 19-year-old player is a pioneer in winning the tournament with her first major title.

During the golf championship last Sunday, Yuka Saso braved through double bogeys and then birdied the third playoff with a 10-foot putt which led her to bring home the trophy, as per CNN Sports.

The Filipino-Japanese teenager is tied to South Korean golf player Park Inbee, who was also a champion of the tournament at 19. Park won back in 2008, according to Japan Times.

The Ladies Professional Golf Association’s Instagram account consecutively posted about Saso’s win. One of the posts states that her name will remain forever in the history of the US Women’s Open.

For Saso, the feat remains incredulous, ‘Yeah, I was just looking at all of the great players in here, and I can’t believe my name’s gonna be here.’

Saso also revealed that Rory McIlroy, a four-time men’s major champion, showed support to her on Instagram, as per Golf Channel’s tweet. She said, ‘Rory mentioned me on Instagram and said, ‘Get that trophy.’ And I did! So thank you, Rory.’

Shortly after Saso’s video was posted, McIlroy quoted the tweet and addressed his congratulations to the young winner.

Given Saso’s dual citizenship, she is the first Filipino to have won a major golf tournament, while two other Japanese women have scored majors before her. The first one was Hisako Higuchi at the LPGA Championship in 1977, followed by Hinako Shibuno at the Women’s British Open in 2019.
