The world apparently doesn’t understand the eggplant emoji
Apart from memes, you can trust emojis to have your back when words can’t do the talking. Adobe conducted a study called The Global Emoji Trend Report 2021, which focuses on the highly used digital pictograms. It was released in time for World Emoji Day.
One of the key takeaways is that the ‘eggplant’ ranked first as the most misunderstood emoji globally, followed by the ‘peach’ and ‘clown.’ These emojis possibly have innuendos and double meanings which are the norm in communicating digitally. 63% of Gen Z’ers agreed on using emojis differently than their intended meaning.
The purple vegetable also takes the lead in another category. When it comes to emojis that make or break your chances of getting a date, ‘eggplant’ is number one in making you less likable. ‘Peach’ takes the second spot again, as it’s followed by the ‘wacky tongue out.’ Among those that make you more likable are the ‘kissy face,’ ‘three hearts,’ and heart eyes consecutively.
Another finding from the study was the top five favorite emojis. Included in the list were the ‘laughing face, ‘thumbs up,’ ‘red heart,’ ‘kissy face,’ and ‘sad face with one teardrop.’ You probably used these when you don’t know what to reply anymore. In fact, 75% of emoji users worldwide agree that it’s fine to send an emoji as a quick response instead of words.
The results were gathered through a survey of 7,000 people from the U.S., UK, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, and South Korea. To see the rest of the study’s findings on emojis, visit Adobe’s blog.
