There will be a Hidilyn Diaz monument in Zamboanga soon
Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz has a lot to look forward to – from the millions worth of cash prizes to housing properties, and a lifetime of free airline flights, among many others. Apart from all of those well-deserved rewards, she will also have a statue built in her hometown Zamboanga City.
The city’s councilor Elbert Atilano, who also happens to be Diaz’s former coach, said that the concrete memorial would be built at the facade of the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex.
‘The monument will serve as recognition of Diaz’s outstanding accomplishment. It will be an inspiration for all the people of Zamboanga City and to future generations,’ he added.

Atilano also mentioned that the Zamboanga City Engineer’s Office was reported to have received around five to seven million pesos for the construction of the monument. This was on top of the initial P2.5 million cash incentive that the city council approved for Diaz’s win.
University de Zamboanga, the institution Diaz attended before transferring to College of St. Benilde, gave her an additional P1 million. Atilano also said that 13 local companies in their city also pledged to give her rewards.
Diaz already arrived in the country on Wednesday night. But before the weightlifter’s commemoration in her locality with a ticker-tape parade, the celebration has to take a pause since she should undergo a one-week quarantine at Sofitel Plaza Hotel.
