This artist recreated Miss Universe gowns with pancit canton and more

They say that every artwork has a distinct style that makes it stand out. Edgian Florida is an 18-year-old artist from Iloilo City who creates pieces using common everyday items, and that’s exactly how he piqued the Internet’s curiosity.

‘I use unconventional materials and foods as designs to create fashion illustrations,’ Edgian explained. His mixed media artworks were initially fused with flower petals. He then explored other elements to use in his pieces like paper clips, spaghetti, shells, raw meat, and other items that you could imagine.

It takes Edgian less than an hour to produce his artworks — 30 minutes to craft an outfit with flower petals and 45 minutes when he uses food. He forms the materials on a piece of bond paper and snaps an image of it afterward. It’s also amusing how the artist revealed that he would sometimes eat the food after taking a photo.

Edgian’s creations are inspired by the works of his idols: He looks up to Mak Tumang, a prominent Filipino fashion designer famous for making Catriona Gray’s ‘Lava’ Gown. He also mentioned Edgar Artis, an Armenian fashion illustrator who combines ordinary items to complete his work.

Though Edgian is known for his lively mix of materials on paper, he also tried his hand on other art forms. He recalled, ‘Before, I’ve done poster [slogans], painting, [and] doing crafts. Then I decided to explore and do fashion art. After that, [I did] the cut-out illustrations.’

The artist shared that his interest in beauty pageants ignited his desire to pursue a career in fashion design. Out of the hundreds of creations that Edgian has created, his three main picks are composed of the (unofficial) holy trinity of Filipina beauty pageant icons.

Rabiya Mateo

While Rabiya Mateo’s bright yellow gown is encrusted with Swarovski crystals, Edgian’s version is creatively designed with noodles.

Catriona Gray

The Miss Universe 2018 winner is clad in a red high-slit dress for the evening gown competition. Edgian’s take was composed of crushed dark chocolate and Oreo bits.

Pia Wurtzbach

Pia Wurtzbach’s National Costume attire for the Miss Universe 2015 competition was a capiz terno. In Edgian’s recreation, it was made up of bigas or rice grains.

The first few posts of Edgian on Instagram showcased his creations on utilizing petals to make a pyramidal arrangement of dresses. Edgian’s botanical pieces usually involve one kind of flower, but he shared, ‘Sometimes I can combine other petals to [make it] look interesting.’

After Edgian’s attempt to make floral-related artworks, he then progressed to incorporating food. He shared, ‘I want to offer something unique, an edible art [sic], inspiring, and new, so I decided to use raw ingredients.’

He first came up with the concept of using vegetables for the gowns, which then gradually evolved into an assortment of ingredients. The artist also incorporated different kinds of food like dilis, siomai, and pizza.
