Twitter experiments on upvote and downvote feature for tweets
If you’ve been on Twitter for quite a while, you know your way around the heart, retweet, and quote tweet features. But the microblogging app recently announced that it would roll out a trial on up and down votes on users’ replies.
The experiment on the new feature is just a test for research at the moment. It explained, ‘We’re testing this to understand the types of replies you find relevant in a convo, so we can work on ways to show more of them. Your downvotes aren’t public, while your upvotes will be shown as likes.’
For iOS users, the up and down votes may be seen in various forms. It might appear in thumbs up and thumbs down buttons, a heart icon and down arrow, and up and down figures. The latter style was compared to Reddit’s interface, and the forum app actually replied with a gif with a text that reads ‘interesting.’
Some of you on iOS may see different options to up or down vote on replies. We're testing this to understand the types of replies you find relevant in a convo, so we can work on ways to show more of them.

A user asked the purpose of the thumbs down icon (referring to it as a ‘dislike’ button’) if they can’t see the number of people who clicked it. Twitter explained that the downvote button would let the app know if a reply isn’t relevant to the conversation. It said, ‘We want to better understand the types of replies you do and don’t find relevant in a convo.’
In a follow-up tweet, Twitter clarified that the thumbs down button doesn’t correspond to a ‘dislike’ button. It also said that the votes wouldn’t change the order of replies.
According to TechCrunch, the test is currently available to a small group on iOS only.
This isn't quite a dislike button. In this research experiment, the thumbs down icon is a down vote that lets us know that you think the reply isn’t relevant to the conversation. We want to better understand the types of replies you do and don't find relevant in a convo.
