30 people helped a whale shark stuck in a net in Quezon province
At a time when faith in humanity has slim chances to be restored, a report on an incident in Quezon Province might change your mind. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) shared that a whale shark was released to sea after it was seen entangled in a fishing net.
In Lamon Bay of Antimonan, there were about 30 fishermen, villagers, and local barangay officials to help the three-meter long butanding or whale shark. The DENR confirmed that the friendly giant had no visible injuries.
DENR-Calabarzon director Nilo Tamoria explained that the presence of the whale area near the seashore could mean that there was a “rich marine biodiversity.”
Tamoria also reminded people that they shouldn’t touch or feed whale sharks once they come across one. This move might affect their behavior and cause detrimental effects on them. He said, ‘We need to continue to conserve and protect the marine ecosystem.’
‘Kung ano ang ginagawa natin sa kagubatan at kalupaan, ay magkakaroon din ng epekto sa ating katubigan at karagatan,’ he added. ‘Kaya patuloy natin itong pag ingatan.’
The recent occurrence of the whale shark on Monday wasn’t the first time that a marine mammal was spotted in the community, according to DENR CALABARZON. On the other hand, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List stated that this sea creature was classified as endangered.
