Ice cream, ants, and more were sent to space by SpaceX

A couple of weeks ago, 7-Eleven sent a Slurpee drink to space. Recently, Space X launched its Dragon capsule that brought a few more interesting supplies and experiments worth 4,800 pounds to the International Space Station (ISS).

The spacecraft was scheduled to be sent to space on Saturday but was canceled due to bad weather conditions. Its second attempt was successful as it blasted off the following day. This served as SpaceX’s 23rd delivery for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in less than a decade. It successfully arrived in space on Monday, August 30.

The shipment includes fresh food such as ice cream, avocados, and lemons. These were for the seven astronauts in the ISS, namely Mark Vande Hei, Oleg Novitskiy, Pyotr Dubrov, Megan McArthur, Shane Kimbrough, Akihiko Hishide, and Thomas Pesquet.

The cargo also carried ants, brine shrimp, and plants as test subjects sent by the Girl Scouts. There were also seeds from mouse-ear cress that University of Wisconsin-Madison scientists flew up for genetic research. These items are to be observed in a weightless setting.

The list doesn’t end there since Japanese start-up company Gitai Inc. also sent a robotic arm that will attempt to “screw items together in its orbital debut and perform other mundane chores normally done by astronauts.” The initial tests will be done inside the space station.

Gitai Inc.’s chief technology officer Toyoyak Kozuki told AP News that their future robot models would venture out to space to practice other repair jobs. By 2025, there’s a possibility that a group of these arms could aid in building lunar bases and mine the moon for “precious resources.”
