‘Sinigang’ reigns as the best rated vegetable soup worldwide
When you ask Filipinos what their favorite local food is, the answers may vary, but the choices wouldn’t miss out on the classics — adobo, tinola, nilaga, and sinigang. Meanwhile, the latter dish landed in the number one spot as the best rated vegetable soup.
International food website Travel Atlas posted a list of 161 vegetable soups in the world. The Philippines’ sinigang topped the list with a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars. The leading dish also made it to the Most Popular category, where it landed in eighth place.
The site’s description of the soup includes all the basic ingredients and highlights sampalok, the fruit of the tamarind tree. According to the post, sinigang is a main dish traditionally served hot, along with rice. It added, ‘It is an often seen dish at special occasions such as birthdays or weddings, and over time, as the dish became more popular.’
‘With its sour lightness perfectly matching the harsh tropical heat of the country, sinigang is a unique soup that is a true representative of Filipino cuisine,’ it continued.
Travel Atlas also included a list of recommended places in the country that serves “good” sinigang. The three restaurants were Locavore in Pasig City, followed by Sentro 1771 and Felly J’s Kitchen, both located in Makati City.
The second and third runner-ups in the Best Rated category are Latvia’s skābeņu zupa soup (4.8/5 stars) and Nigeria’s ogbono soup (4.8/5 stars), respectively. On the other hand, placing last on the list was India’s pachi palusu soup that didn’t receive any stars from the site.
