This Canadian soccer player will be the first openly trans Olympic medalist

Over the course of the Tokyo Olympics, there have been reports on athletes who are openly part of the LGBTQ+ community and/or nonbinary. There’s weightlifter Laurel Hubbard, skateboarder Alana Smith, and even Mayor Belmonte’s alleged lookalike, swimmer Erica Sullivan. However, Canada’s soccer star Quinn will be the only trans and non-binary athlete to score a medal.

The midfielder’s team beat Team USA on Monday and will have a women’s football match against Sweden on Friday. This means they will acquire either silver or gold.

‘[I’m] getting messages from young people saying they’ve never seen a trans person in sports before,’ said Quinn to CBC Olympics after Monday’s win. ‘Athletics is the most exciting part of life. … If I can allow kids to play the sports they love, that’s my legacy and that’s what I’m here for.’

Quinn, who goes by only one name, uses the pronouns “they” and “their”. They also came out as transgender and nonbinary on Instagram last September 2020. She encouraged her followers to put their pronouns in their bio, follow other trans and nonbinary personalities, practice the use of gender-neutral pronouns with other people, and most importantly vote.

‘I know for me it’s something I’ll be doing over again for the rest of my life,’ said Quinn on coming out. ‘As I’ve lived as an openly trans person with the people I love most for many years, I did always wonder when I’d come out publicly.’
