BLACKPINK is the first Asian act to be picked as the United Nation’s SDG advocate

BLACKPINK had a lot of memorable first time’s – it was the first female K-pop group to perform at Coachella and the first K-pop ensemble to have a music video reach one billion views on YouTube. Recently, the four girls were named as the first Asian Act to be appointed as an advocate for the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The UN announced on Twitter its latest roster of SDG Advocates last Saturday, September 18. Apart from pop superstars BLACKPINK, the organization also welcomes Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, STEM activist Valentina Muñoz Rabanal, and Microsoft’s President Brad Smith.

‘We truly believe in the importance of collective action,’ said BLACKPINK in a statement on UN’s SDG advocates website. ‘We will only be able to make a difference when we come together, for the good of everyone. Now is the time to act for a safer tomorrow and a better future.’

The 17 SDGs a.k.a. Global Goals acknowledge that actions in one area will affect results in others and that development must balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability. These were adopted by the UN in 2015 as “a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.”

BLACKPINK was also appointed as Advocates for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) back in 2020 and has been delivering powerful messages to the world since then. Earlier in February 2021, the K-pop ensemble released a video to raise climate change awareness.
