Face shields aren’t required outdoors, says Duterte again

If you think you’re getting deja vu because of the announcement, well, you’re not. President Rodrigo Duterte had declared that face shields were not required in outdoor areas in June, but took it back a few hours after. But he confirmed it once again on a taped briefing aired on Wednesday, September 22.

Duterte shared that he approved the recommendation of the Department of Health’s technical advisory group (TAG) and medical experts to no longer mandate the use of face shields. He said, ‘No more face shields outdoors. The only limitation on [the use of] face shield is to use them in 3Cs.’

The places classified as “3Cs” are closed, crowded, and close contact areas. Duterte also said that he already ordered for the implementing guidelines to be issued immediately.

The use and effectiveness of face shields against COVID-19 have been an ongoing debate among lawmakers and the general public. Among all the countries worldwide, the Philippines is the only nation that requires the use of face shields as an added protective tool during the pandemic.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) said they would look into the experience of the Filipinos in using face shields to curb the spread of the virus. Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe, WHO’s Representative to the Philippines, explained that it can reduce the likelihood of infection through the eyes and boost the protection from the poor wearing of masks.
