Filipino comic book ‘Ella Arcangel’ will be adapted into an animated film

There have been releases of Filipino animated series and movies in recent years like Trese, Hayop Ka!, Barangay 143, and more. If you’re a fan of those types of work, then you can bet on the Filipino folklore comic book Ella Arcangel since it will have its own animated rendition.

Mervin Malonzo, the author and artist behind the National Book Award-winning comic TABI PO announced on Twitter, ‘Magandang gabi! Ikinagagalak naming sabihin na magkakaroon ng pelikula na base sa tomo 2, Ella Arcangel: Awit ng Pangil at Kuko.’

The tweet added that the upcoming animated film received a grant from the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). It was also accompanied by an 18-second video teaser, with a caption that states Ella will be joined by other characters named Mimiw and Pangil.

Ella Arcangel: Awit ng Pangil at Kuko is the second volume in the comic book series by Julius Villanueva. It follows the story of a young mambabarang (sorcerer) in a strange community called Barangay Masikap. She battles both men and mythical monsters to save the residents and cats within a small portion of the large city.

Back in May 2020, Malonzo released a 19-minute animated version of Ella Arcangel: Oyayi sa Dilim on his YouTube account. He shared on his website that it took him about three years to complete it and added, ‘I just want this animation to exist because I am a fan of Ella Arcangel and her stories. The author, Julius Villanueva is one of the most prolific comic creators I know.’

More details on the animated adaptation are yet to be shared.
