Netflix is getting into the gaming world, acquired its first video game studio

Esports served more than just entertainment in recent years. There was a Filipino who landed a US scholarship for League of Legends, and a professional gamer was offered a 7-figure offer to be part of a team. With all those current advancements in the gaming world, it’s no surprise that Netflix acquired its first gaming studio.

There were speculations earlier in May on how the video company might open its doors to the video game industry, and head of games Mike Verdu just confirmed it. He said in a blog post, ‘We’re in the early stages of creating a great gaming experience for our members around the world. So we’re excited to announce today Night School Studio is joining Netflix.’

The independent game developer was founded in 2014 and is known for its player-driven narratives. The team behind it are veterans from Disney and Telltale but also includes bright new voices. Its website states that they are “building visionary worlds and pushing the boundaries of storytelling.”

‘We’re inspired by their bold mission to set a new bar for storytelling in games,’ added Verdu in the blog. ‘Their commitment to artistic excellence and proven track record make them invaluable partners as we build out the creative capabilities and library of Netflix games together.’

Night School founder Sean Krankel wants to expand its narrative and design ambitions across original games. He said, ‘Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers were such a natural pairing. It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively.’
