Unreleased cassette tape of John Lennon and Yoko Ono was auctioned for around P2.9 million

If you’re a big fan of The Beatles or simply a music enthusiast, you would remember that there were speculations on Yoko Ono being the reason behind the brand’s breakup. But even after all the drama, her music with John Lennon is something just as memorable. While their final album Double Fantasy was released in 1980, reports said that the couple’s unreleased cassette tape was auctioned off recently.

For 370,000 kroner (approximately P2.9 million), the never-before-heard recording was auctioned in Denmark on Tuesday. The unidentified bidder also got to keep 29 photos and a copy of the school paper containing parts of the Lennon interview. It was sold over the estimated price of 200,000 to 300,000 kroner (P1.5 million to P2.3 million).

To give more context on the recording, auction house Bruun Rasmussen explained that Lenno and Ono traveled to Denmark in December 1969 to settle custody issues. Danish journalists hear about their whereabouts and planned a press conference.

‘Due to severe weather conditions, a small group of journalists and four 16-year-old students on the quest of interviewing John Lennon for the school magazine turned up late for the press conference,’ said the auction house. ‘Lennon and Ono agreed to talk to them anyway.’

The tape contained an unpublished song called Radio Peace, which was written for a radio station in the Netherlands. It also had John Lennon’s 33-minute conversation with the student journalists in January 1970. They talked about topics that “defined Lennon in that period” such as his peace campaign with Ono, The Beatles, and his hair.
