Your fave Queso de Bola might not face a price hike during the pandemic
Now that people have brought out memes and songs of Jose Mari Chan and Mariah Carey, honoring the longest Christmas season officially started. But there’s another important aspect of the celebration: food. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) urged manufacturers of Noche Buena items to retain current prices for the upcoming holiday season.
During the public briefing of Laging Handa on Thursday, Trade Undersecretary Ruth Castelo explained that maintaining prices of said products will help Filipinos who will celebrate Christmas amid a pandemic. She said, ‘We call on manufacturers, maybe they can opt not to adjust prices for Christmas products this year or if they will adjust, just at the absolute minimum.’
‘This year, we will try to convince them not to adjust prices again,’ she added. The DTI also convinced suppliers to keep their 2019 suggested retail prices (SRPs) in the past year.
The official said that DTI would release this year’s SRP list for the products in question by the end of October to early November. The usual items for Noche Buena or Christmas Eve meal include Queso de bola, ham, and other ingredients to make fruit salad, leche flan, pancit malabon, pancit bihon, liempo, and more.
While Christmas is still a few months away, DTI also published its latest SRP list for basic necessities and prime commodities that apply to groceries and supermarkets last August 29. Some of those products are instant noodles, coffee, milk, condiments, canned goods, and non-food items like soap. The price increments range from Php. 0.20 to Php 1.00, which is considered as a minimum increase.
