DILG calls Bloomberg’s PH pandemic ranking ‘unfair’
The Philippines’ tourist spots have been positively acknowledged throughout the year, but the current pandemic response isn’t exactly doing as great. Bloomberg reported its latest Covid Resilience Ranking, which showed that the country is the “worst place” to be in amid the pandemic.
While other Southeast Asian nations were also ranked low, it’s the country’s second month to remain at the bottom in the list of 53 countries. Bloomberg stated, ‘The Philippines fares among the worst on vaccine coverage, with just 26% of the population covered amid challenges in bringing shots to areas outside of the big cities.’
The country placed 52nd in June, sank to 53rd in September, and remains in the same spot this October with the lowest overall resilience score of 40.5. This was based on 12 data indicators measuring virus containment, vaccination coverage, and mortality rate, among others.
Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said in an ANC interview that Bloomberg’s recent report was ‘biased’ and ‘unfair’. He said, ‘In the (COVID-19 response) recovery cluster, we talked about that and we feel that the Bloomberg resilience data is practically unfair to our country.’
Malaya explained that there were many Western countries that put the Philippines at a disadvantage. He elaborated, ‘We just started our universal healthcare. Di talaga tayo tataas d’yan. We’re a developing country… and the quality of life is also considered. In my opinion, it’s really a biased survey towards Western countries.’
The government official shared that the country is “seeing good cases”. There has been a 48 percent decline in cases for the past two weeks and vaccination efforts have also shown improvement. 30 million first doses have been administered and around 26 million for the second.
‘We are getting there. I would expect an improvement in the rankings within the next month,’ Malaya added.
