Leni Robredo just turned pink into a color of hope

After all the #LetLeniLead hashtags that trended, it’s now official: Vice President Leni Robredo seeks the highest seat in the government for the 2022 elections. She was nominated by opposition group coalition 1Samabayanan as its presidential candidate in September, but she confirmed that she was running today, October 7.

Robredo’s speech pointed out that corruption, incompetence, and lack of empathy should be replaced by better leadership. She makes it clear where she stands, ‘Nasa panig tayo ng mga sinasagad ang lahat para iraos ang sarili, ang pamilya, ang kapwa, mula sa pandemyang ito.’

During the announcement, she also firmly declared‘Buong-buo ang loob ko ngayon: Kailangan nating palayain ang sarili mula sa kasalukuyang situwasyon. Lalaban ako; lalaban tayo. Inihahain ko ang aking sarili bilang kandidato sa pagkapangulo sa halalan ng 2022.’

Before Robredo expressed her intent to run, a group of committed volunteers carried out the pink ribbon campaign. It invited supporters of the presidential aspirant by urging people to change their profile pictures with a Laban Leni pink ribbon, tie a pink ribbon in front outside their house, share related announcements online, or simply wear pink and post it on social media.

‘On Wednesdays, we wear pink,’ was an iconic line from the film Mean Girls. But today, Filipinos made an exception and wore the said color on a Thursday. In fact, many people, including their pets, were dressed in the flushed color and shared it online to join the campaign. Some also posted memes of international celebrities wearing pink paired with the hashtag #LabanLeni2022.

Other users pointed out how they don’t agree with the whole “dilawan” label or other symbols that mirror some candidates. They stated that they are “pro pinoy” and jokingly called themselves ‘Pinktellectuals.’
