This 16-year-old broke PH women’s figure skating records

Filipino women in sports have been making a mark this year. With Hidilyn Diaz making history by scoring gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Yuka Saso currently at the fifth spot of women’s golf rankings, Sofia Frank joins them as she broke several Philippine records in women’s figure skating at the 2021 Finlandia Trophy in Finland from October 7 to 10.

The 16-year-old became the country’s highest scorer in the short program (53.30 points), free skate (94.79 points), and an overall score of 148.09 points for a female skater during the International Skating Union-sanctioned competition. The Filipino-American figure skater placed 18th out of 26 skaters.

The Philippine Skating Union (PHSU) acknowledged Frank’s accomplishments in a Facebook post. It read, ‘That was a stunning performance, Sofia! Thank you for inspiring the future generation of figure skaters in the Philippines. Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino!’

Frank beat Filipino-Swiss skater Alisson Perticheto who previously had a total of 139.70 points during the 2019 ISU Challenger Series Warsaw Cup. PHSU said in a separate post, ‘This is only Sofia’s 2nd appearance in the international stage of figure skating, and the total scores are conquered by a significant 8.39 pts.’

Frank began skating when she was three years old and her family moved to Colorado Springs in 2018 for her to train. In an interview with GMA News, she revealed that figure skating has always been her dream, ‘I loved it ever since I was little. It really makes me happy. I fell in love first with the dresses of the ice skaters and then I tried ice skating. Before I knew it, I was hooked.’
