1B Facebook users to say goodbye to their faceprints and facial recognition system
Facebook announced that it will take down its facial recognition system in the coming weeks. Over a billion users will have to say goodbye to the technology that automatically identifies their photos and videos since the social media giant will delete their faceprints.
Meta’s VP of artificial intelligence Jerome Pesenti discussed the concerns about the use of facial recognition on a blog post on Tuesday. He said, ‘There are many concerns about the place of facial recognition technology in society, and regulators are still in the process of providing a clear set of rules governing its use.
‘Amid this ongoing uncertainty, we believe that limiting the use of facial recognition to a narrow set of use cases is appropriate,’ Pesenti added. He explained that the technology’s use is “broadly valuable” and “socially acceptable” when used in other services to help people gain access to a locked account, verify their identity in financial products or unlock a personal device.
Pesenti also explained that its Automatic Alt Text (AAT) function, which provides image descriptions for visually-impaired people, will no longer include the names of people recognized in the photos but “will function normally otherwise”.
The move comes after a recent global outage and when Facebook whistleblowers revealed problems regarding the platform’s products. It also changed its parent company name to “Meta” last week.
‘Every new technology brings with it potential for both benefit and concern, and we want to find the right balance,’ Pesenti said as he ended the blog post. ‘In the case of facial recognition, its long-term role in society needs to be debated in the open, and among those who will be most impacted by it.’
