Renowned fashion designer Virgil Abloh passes away at 41

Whether or not you’re deeply into fashion, the name Virgil Abloh probably rings a bell. He was Louis Vuitton’s menswear artistic director and the first African-American to do, and he was also the founder of Off-White. The world was in shock when they heard about his passing on November 28. He was only 41 years old.

A commemorative post on Abloh’s Instagram account stated that he was battling a rare form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma, for two years. It read, ‘He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.’

The post also explained how the Illinois-born fashion designer’s work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered despite the challenge. He was also described to be driven to “open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design”.

‘He often said, “Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself,” believing deeply in the power of art to inspire future generations,’ the post added.

LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault posted a statement on Abloh’s passing through Louis Vuitton’s social media pages. He said, ‘Virgil was not only a genius designer and a visionary, he was also a man with a beautiful soul and great wisdom.’

‘The LVMH family joins me in this moment of great sorrow and we are all thinking of his loved ones on the passing of their husband, father, brother, son and friend,’ he added. Abloh is survived by his wife, Shannon Abloh, children Lowe and Grey Abloh, sister Edwina Abloh, and parents Nee and Eunice Abloh.

Back in 2011, Abloh was also named as the creative director of Kanye West’s creative agency DONDA. He crafted a few of the most successful album artworks of the 21st century such as West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Yeezus, and the rapper’s collab with Jay-Z Watch the Throne.

Other prominent figures who worked with Abloh posted tributes on social media such as BTS, Drake, Offset, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and many others.
