Will Apple TV+’s K-Drama ‘Dr. Brain’ beat ‘Squid Game’?

A few months had passed since Squid Game premiered, and there’s no denying that it was a hit since it garnered 111 million views worldwide. Meanwhile, Apple TV+ recently released its own Korean-language series during the streaming site’s launch in South Korea.

Apple’s move comes at a time when Korean content has reached many people. The country’s entertainment industry gained global popularity from K-pop stars like BTS and BLACKPINK, the 2020 Oscar-winning film Parasite, and recently, through the success of the most popular Netflix series.

The sci-fi thriller show Dr. Brain, based on the webcomic of the same name, follows the story of a cold-hearted neurologist named Koh Sewon. Throughout the six episodes, he tried to find clues to solve a mysterious family accident by conducting brain experiments.

The show’s director Kim Jee-woon explained that the global audience began to understand Korean culture because of artistic efforts and he also shared that he pushed for the translation to be accurate. He said in an interview with Reuters, ‘The era of COVID-19 has come with new age for drama production.’

‘I hope Dr. Brain can prove there are diverse works in South Korea that cover a wide variety of genres, sensibilities and materials as much as previous mega hit Korean series,’ Kim added.

Dr. Brain‘s lead actor Lee Sun-kyun, who also starred in Parasite, explained that his portrayal as Koh is one of a man dragged into a “whirlpool of emotions” whose connections to other people’s minds made him ponder on his faults.

‘It is a very deep science fiction mysterious thriller,’ he said, ‘But at the same time it is a drama about how a man who was destitute of feelings happened to receive others’ emotions due to side effects of brain scanning.’

Viewers will have their own opinions regarding Apple’s first K-drama series. But while placing the streaming service rivalry aside, it’s great to see Asian films and shows receive the recognition that they deserve.
