PH women’s team lands FIFA World Cup spot for the first time

There are many Filipino women athletes basking in the glory because of the success they worked hard to achieve, including weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz’s victory in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Recently, the Philippine women’s football team made history as it landed the Philippines’ first FIFA World Cup berth.

During the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022’s quarterfinal stage on January 30, the PH women’s team defeated Chinese Taipei on penalties, 4-3, following a 1-1 draw. It was held at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune, India.

Sarina Bolden delivered the winning goal for the Philippines in the penalty shoot-out after a few saves by goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel. The feat will also advance the country to the semis of the match. The team made it to the continental tournament’s final four together with Korea, Japan, and China.

Australian head coach Alen Stajcic shared that the PH women’s team’s win is an unbelievable moment for the group. He said, ‘Now every young kid back home in the Philippines can be inspired… We’re really proud of each other, but we’re even more proud that we’ve inspired the next generation.’

The upcoming FIFA World Cup is set in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.
