Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe now hold the same Marvel world record

The appearance of the three Spider-Mans in Spider-Man: No Way Home is pretty iconic. Seeing Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire together with Tom Holland surely gave long-time fans a nostalgic feeling. But apart from Maguire joining the film, Willem Dafoe was also part of it – which led to both notching world records for their roles.

Maguire and Dafoe who play Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, respectively, were recently awarded for having the “longest career as a live-action Marvel character.” According to Guinness World Records, both actors have played their individual roles across 19 years and 225 days.

The same record was previously held by Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, whose career as Wolverine and Professor X spanned the 16 years and 232 days from X-Men in 2000 to Logan in 2017.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Maguire said his role in No Way Home was like revisiting what was part of his history. He added,  ‘I’m not quite sure how to put it, just to get back into that and, I don’t want to say like close the chapter, but revisit and have certain resolutions and just join in this loving creative spirit.’

Meanwhile, Dafoe said to The Hollywood Reporter that his role should be more than just a “glorified comeback.” He explained, ‘I’ll come back if there’s something really good…If it’s just a cameo or a little tip of the hat, I’m not sure. If it’s something substantial, ‘Yeah’.

The whole multiverse concept into the Marvel Cinematic Universe opens opportunities for actors from other Marvel films formed beyond the MCU to also reprise their respective characters. Recently, the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to expand the multiverse further, and there are speculations about different live-action Marvel characters doing a crossover into the MCU.
