Facebook’s daily user count declined for the first time ever

Whether or not you still use Facebook, it’s still labeled as the most popular social media site by far. But at the same time, the platform recently announced its daily active users (DAUs) declined for the first time in its 18-year history.

According to the tech giant’s fourth-quarter earnings report, its DAUs fell from 1.93 billion in the third quarter of 2021 to 1.929 billion in the fourth. DAUs are the total number of people that engage in some way with the product on a given day.

A company spokesperson also confirmed it’s the app’s first time to encounter the said drop for two consecutive quarters. At the same time, Facebook parent company Meta has been battling negative headlines around whistleblowers who revealed a range of problems with its products, and disinformation, among others.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg warned of slowing revenue growth by competing with their rivals like TikTok and YouTube, while advertisers are also cutting their budget. But he was confident that their video and virtual reality investments would be a success.

Zuckerberg added that his company didn’t have to compete with a major rival following the strategy shifts. He said, ‘The teams are executing quite well and the product is growing very quickly.’

‘The thing that is somewhat unique here is that TikTok is so big a competitor already and also continues to grow at quite a fast rate,’ he continued. Meta’s most recent move is focusing on Reels, which continues to have high engagement on FB and Instagram.

Zuckerberg explained, ‘It’s clear short-form video will be an increasing part of how people consume content moving forward, and Reels is now our fastest-growing content format by far.’
