No one to hug on V-Day? DENR says hug a tree instead

There are a few days left until Valentine’s Day. While some couples already have plans, some are comfortable on their own. But what if you’re somewhere in between and looking for that potential someone? Here’s an unusual (but also fun) way to spend Feb. 14 as per the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR): hug a tree.

The department’s Forest Management Bureau (FMB) is set to hold a week-long virtual tree-hugging event starting Feb. 14 to Feb. 18. The move aims to bring awareness about the importance of nurturing forests.

The DENR-FMB online event also has an online challenge that individuals can partake in. If you don’t have someone to cuddle with, find the nearest tree and show appreciation by hugging it. Check out the mechanics of DENR-FMB’s Valentine’s event below:

1. Like the FMB Facebook page and follow their Instagram account.
2. Share the event post from the FMB page or Instagram.
3. Post a photo showing a creative way of hugging a tree with a short description of the importance of tree-hugging along with the hashtags #TreeHuggingDay, #PunoNgPagmamahal, and #ValentinesDay

If you aren’t expecting flowers or chocolates during this love month, DENR-FMB will give tokens to selected participants with the best entries in their Tree Hugging Campaign.

If you’re not familiar with the concept of tree-hugging, it actually has been a tradition of nature lovers and tree conservators. But one of the earliest examples was during the 1970s in India, where the Chipko Movement started.

The non-violent social and ecological movement was spearheaded by rural villagers, specifically women, who aimed to protect trees and forests slated for government-backed logging. The Hindi word chipko translates to “to hug” or “to cling to” and mirrors the primary action of embracing trees to hinder loggers.
