TikTok is the ‘worst’ app to scroll before sleeping, study says

Everybody has different routines before going to bed, and scrolling endlessly on your phone is most likely one of them. While there are many social media apps that keep you entertained, a recent study showed that going through TikTok is the worst platform to use if you want to have better sleep at night.

Sleep science and review site Sleep Junkie conducted research by surveying 2012 adults to discover which platform leads to sleep disruptions. It turns out that TikTok users take an hour and seven minutes to fall asleep after using the app. They also use 14 percent of their sleep in the REM (rapid eye movement) phase, which is half the recommended amount for a healthy adult.

People who went on apps almost experienced the same thing. Instagram Story scrollers spend 15.5% of their night in REM sleep, taking 58 minutes some shut-eye. Meanwhile, Snapchat users consume 16 % of REM sleep and fell asleep after 56 minutes.

Interestingly, Twitter and Facebook managed to come out as the ‘best’ in this research. Twitter users spend 18% of their sleep in the REM phase and only took 50 minutes to drift off. Facebook users enjoyed 19.5% REM and only took 45 minutes trying to get zzz’s.

Whether you use TikTok or other social media platforms, the research pointed out something important: using electronic devices two hours before bedtime isn’t recommended. The blue light emitted from users’ devices stimulates the brain and can lead to poor physical and mental health.

Sleep expert Dorothy Chambers said, ‘This past year people have been struggling to sleep more than ever, and with 78 percent of adults admitting to partaking in revenge sleep procrastination, it’s no surprise sleep hygiene has taken a hit.’
